A slick silicone-based lube will last a long time with just a little application, which is important because the anus doesn’t self-lubricate. The slickness needs soap and water to wash off, and not all silicone lubes are compatible with silicone toys (apply a dab on the base of your toy and rub vigorously to see if there’s a reaction). However, silicone will stay on in the shower.
Some people prefer water-based lubes, especially thick and pillowy lubes which help to create a cushion during anal sex. These may dry up more quickly, but you can reapply more lube to keep the good times going.
A few anal products contain a numbing agent. This might sound like a good idea, but it’s not. For starters, numbing products will decrease sensation for both partners, which means less pleasure. But it also means that it’s easy to be too rough, and the receiving partner won’t necessarily know if any damage has been done because of the numbing agent.
If you take things slow, use lube and communicate, anal sex shouldn’t be painful. This is exactly why we recommend a body-friendly lube.
Although you can use regular lube for anal sex, the lube in our anal sex category was specifically designed to make anal sex and masturbation as pleasurable as possible. So stock up and enjoy!
