How Often Do You Need Sex, Really? How long could you abstain from sex, masturbation, or any sexual release?

Sex is one of those things that some people see as optional and fun while others view it as a necessity to their health and happiness. If you fall into the latter group, you probably try to have sex or at least masturbate as often as possible. The more often you want or need to have sex, the more energy you expend on it and the more time you spend thinking about it.

Dear reader, how long you could survive without sex? What about masturbation? I’ll tell you my answers if you reply in the comments!

At one point, I might have thought that I wouldn’t be able to stand or even survive living without sex for over a week. And I didn’t have to test that hypothesis when I was married and having sex, usually several times per week, for years.

But as my marriage crumbled, so, too, did my sex life suffer. I was still in love with my ex and couldn’t think of being in any sort of relationship, whether it be romantic or sexual, with others for over a year after our relationship ended. And when I became ready, I was anxious to begin dating after divorce.

Weeks without sex turned into months and, finally, years before I would sleep with someone else. It wasn’t easy. So much of me hinged on my identity as a sexual person. Although I kept masturbating, using toys, and occasionally sexting and flirting with others, it was strange not to be able to live fully as myself.

Yet, I survived. Those three abstinent years didn’t kill me, even when my lack of sexual activity felt like it was going to be insurmountable. Even if you thought you couldn’t go a long time without sex, you might have found yourself in that very situation? How long did you think would be too long without sex? And when you surprised when you found yourself sexless for months or even years? Perhaps at some point, you didn’t even notice, or you might have been painfully aware of how long it’s been since the last time you had sex!

I haven’t remained celibate for nearly that long since then, and I’ve enjoyed fooling around and having sex with new partners, but there are lulls in between partners.

I couldn’t go nearly that long without an orgasm, however. I masturbate regularly, perhaps longer than many of my female friends. I go through cycles, and it often ties into my menstrual cycle. There are times when I get off at least daily and some days when I masturbate myself to orgasm multiple times (my record is eleven times in case you were wondering!). I don’t think I’ve ever gone more than a week without masturbating since I first learned how.

Although I might not be the typical woman, I know there are plenty of people like me who can’t imagine having no sex in their lives, whether that means finding a partner or going solo. What about you — how long can you wait to have sex? When do you take matters into your own hands?
